When you have just come home from the world premiere of a wonderful new theatre production, in the Opera House, Wellington, New Zealand, it only seems right to write about it straight away.
This show, Arohanui – the greatest love – is destined for greatness and I believe it could ( and hopefuly will) stand stall on any stage in the West End or Broadway. The performers didn’t put a foot wrong and their voices were magic – kia kaha eh hoa ma. Ka nui te pai!
The Wellington events calendar says this of “Arohanui – The Greatest Love”, is a new generation of Māori performance blending traditional haka, martial arts, theatre, poi and musical composition into an energetic and emotional theatrical celebration.”
It’s a dramatic story of love, revenge and torn loyalties: the story of twins Kahu and Mira raised to avenge their father’s death at the hands of mystical people called Patupaiarehe. But when Kahu falls in love with the Patupaiarehe princess he is forced to make the final choice between his family and the love of his life.
The cast has some 30 of the best Kapa Haka exponents from around Aotearoa and takes you on wonderful journey into the Māori world. The haka and taiaha performances were amazing.
After a short season in Wellington it will open in Auckland .. book now, this will sell out!
